A Nice Jewish Boy

Self-important author Leon joins his best friend on a summer holiday near the Baltic Sea to complete his novel. When they arrive, they find their house is already occupied by a carefree woman who challenges Leon to open up. Meanwhile, forest wildfires rage around them and impending disaster looms.

Mathieu lives in Paris, Alice in a small seaside resort in Western France. He is a famous actor, about to turn fifty. She is a piano teacher in her forties. They were in love fifteen years ago, then separated. Time has passed. They each went their ways and slowly healed. When Mathieu goes try to overcome his melancholia in a thermal spa, he stumbles upon Alice.

An upper middle-class French family celebrates a birthday in a restaurant. In one evening and during one meal, family history, tensions, collective and separate grudges, delights, and memories both clash and coalesce.

Macha Ovtchinnikova, author of the film, follows the tracks of her great-great-aunt in Kyiv while her mother tells the story of the aunt’s death, revealing a dramatic episode of the Holocaust: “In my great-great-mother’s home, a little black-and-white picture represented deserted hill covered with dry grass. A little black cross traced on the photograph indicated the approximate place where her sister Esfir was buried with her family. Before the war, Esfir had a happy family, a husband, and three children. They lived in a Jewish neighborhood of Kyiv, close to the Babi Yar ravine.
